The Rendon Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Maria Greenshields-Ziman at CONTEXT Art Miami, Booth C5, December 5 – 10, 2023.
The exhibition will feature sculpture, drawings, paintings, and installation from Greenshields-Ziman’s most recent series Lucent Silva, Sub Aqua, and Shadows all of which focus on graphic representations of the natural world created with materials (spray paint, cardboard, metal, and lightboxes) that speak to sprawling manmade/urban environments. The tension between subject matter and technique highlights the encroachment of human creativity and innovation into nature, even when we seek to pay homage to it.
“Trees and forests, along with accompanying flora, are a key motif and a prevalent theme in my work. Ever since my childhood in rural England, I have observed how the tree’s modulating shape is the principal player in forming the character and ambiance of landscape. No matter how massive, a tree is still sadly fragile and cruelly vulnerable to the forces of change. We are made increasingly aware of the indispensability of forests in maintaining the health of our planet.”
Lucent Silva documents native Californian trees from sapling to maturity, through layers of vellum illuminated by lightboxes. Sub Aqua and Shadows are mixed media works on paper. Shown for the first time together, these complex and layered works provide insight into Greenshields-Ziman’s improvisational process, an immersive study of organic elements, exploring texture and shape through blocking and altering color with spray paint and then enhancing with intuitive line and texture through the application of dry media.
The Rendon Gallery operates as a contemporary art space launched in late 2018, as a supportive platform for a diverse range of artists, both local and international. Inspired by the rich cultural history of Downtown Los Angeles, the gallery’s programming is focused on developing a creative hub and energizing L.A.’s artistic community, as well as offering a multidisciplinary Artist in Residence program.
